Do some over the counter medicines go bad quickly?

I know you should never keep any medicine long..but my question is this...I bought some childrens Mucinex..both the cough and expectorant not more than few months ago..expiration date is 9/08..but when I just opened the expectorant there is a brownish goopy stuff all instide the cap and on top of bottle..the cough is not like this..also the medicine smells stronger than I remembered...of course Im not going to give her any..but wondered what might make it do this...its pricey..so it kinda sucks to have to throw a whole bottle out...

It should not go bad sooner than the expiration date. Was it in excessive heat maybe? Did you leave it in a car for any amount of time? If it looks/smells different than when you initially purchased it, definitely don't use it. But maybe you could talk to your local pharmacist and get a better idea of why it happened.

If it wasn't kept in the sun like was earlier asked, tell your chemist. There could have been a manufacturing problem. If this is the case they MAY be able to replace it for you free of charge. But only if there was a manufacturing problem.
Hope this helps
K

Sounds like that the medicine was somewhere where it wasnt cool enough. The heat must have gotten in it and melted the tablets. Also no the medicines shouldnt be going bad so quickly they should only start to go bad when its near the expiration date.
