How severe can ovarian cysts become?

I went the the ER Friday night because of terrible pain on my left side. They felt like period cramps times 1,000. When I got my first ultrasound done the ER doctor came back saying that I had a cyst that was so large that it was causing my left ovary to twist and it was cutting off blood supply to the ovary. I had another ultrasound done and it came back as saying the first ultrasound was miss read and I just have a very large cyst.

I went to my regular ob/gyn on monday and she just wants me to wait and have another ultrasound in 8 weeks and rechecked in 9.

I am still in an amazing amount of pain and I have been told that cysts go away after 2-3 days... I first noticed pain about 2 weeks ago. I am starting to question if I should get a second opnion or not.

Has anyone ever experienced ovarian cysts.... or the ovarian torosion ... do I have anything to be worried about??

I was rushed to hospital by ambulance 15 yrs ago in terrible pain. They suspected an ectopic pregnancy or ovarian cyst. At the hospital they did an internal scan and found a cyst but said it was ok, for 3 days they had me on strong intravenous pain killers, which just took the edge off the pain, while they tried to find what was causing the pain. They eventually had to rush me down to theatre at midnight for an emergency op because the pain was so bad. They found that the cyst had torted, twisting the ovary and tube, which had to be removed, cutting off the blood supply to the womb.
I did get mild pains at certain times of the month for a few years before which i just put down to "women's problems", but when i was taken to hospital the pain started very suddenly, it went in waves similar to labour pains that are very close together, I could not move and i had mild bleeding too which started with the pain.
If you have a cyst and it ruptures it can cause pain but it is quite safe, if you have a cyst that tortes it is a very serious situation, so if you feel unsure talk to your Dr, or go to another Dr to put your mind at rest. Good luck.

You need to be very careful because I had a grapefruit sized one and it burst and I was lucky because it didn't create any puss sacs inside of me. Your cyst could be filled of pus that will create problems or it could be filled with blood. If you're having that much pain, I would get a second opinion because they can go in and pop it for you and monitor your healing.

The type of ovarian cysts that go away after a short period of time are not large. If the cyst is large and your doctor wants to wait , I would get a second opinion. Go to a different group of doctors that are not affilated with each other. I had one removed last year that was 3 inches x 5 inches...very painful. The surgery was a breeze though so don't worry.

Ovarian cysts are normal. Every month you get cysts with your cycle. Sometimes they do become enlarged and can rupture, which is pretty painful. Once they rupture the pain is alleviated. However, if you go back for another ultrasound at a different point in your cycle and it is still there or getting larger, they may have to remove it. Also, ovarian torsion is pretty uncommon. They would know by ultrasound if you had torsion and that would require surgery to save the ovary.
