What are the likely sequelae of otitis media.?

many thanks to anyone who can help.

none, when it is promptly treated with a good dose of antibiotics.

But possible complications include permanent hearing and the sense of balance damage, encephalitis, brain infection and thus death.

Go see your doctor.

Worst possible scenaria used to be glue ear, mastoiditis or brain abscess.
Middle range problems - bone damage to the 3 little bones which enable you to hear, causing deafness. Reptured ear-drum which releases the pus, so healing begins after that.
Treatment may be antibiotics and analgesics, with possible surgery to get out the gunge.

In children it appears to be a predisposition to this type of condition. Generally these children may have allergies that contribute to the condition. They present with cold symptoms, throat pain and earaches. Children who have numerous "colds/viruses" as infants tend to present with otitis media. While environmental factors can contribute to this, I feel that it is usually a genetically inherited trait. Unfortunately, chronic Otitis media can be part of the continuing prognosis if left untreated

The size, shape & form of the auricle normally vary widely between individuals. Some deformities are genetic origin; in down's syndrome the auricles are usually small and the lobule may be redimentary or absent. The helix of the ear is a recognised site of gouty tophi - white chalky nodules consisting of sodium biurate crystals deposited in the cartilage.

( Auriscopic examination. The external auditory meatus and the typanum may be inspected through a electrically lit auriscope. An improved view of the drum and the meatus will usually be obtained if the auricle is drawn upwards, backwards and slightly laterally in order to straighten the external meatus as much as possible. Wax commonly obscures the view and may be removed by syringing with warm sater. a history of middle ear disease or perforation of the drum precludes syringing by the inexperienced. Hard wax may require to be softened by applying afew drops of warm olive oil for two or three nights before removal.

The normal drum appears pearly-grey, with the handle of the malleus visible and lying almost vertically near the centre of the tymapanic membrance. A cone of light isreflected from its lower end downwards and forwards to the periphery of the drum ).

ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA USUALLY CAUSES EAR ACHE WHICH MAY BE SEVERE, BUT INFANTS IT MAY PRESENT AS AN ACUTE FEBRICLE ILLNESS WITHOUT LOCAL PAIN. THE COMMON ABNORMALITIES ON INSPECTION AND PERFORATION. FOREIGN BODIES IN THE EXTRNAL MEATUS ARE NOT UNCOMMON IN CHILDREN.

Treatment : For otitis media, any pain or pus or noises in the ears, Acupressure points 31 and 1 to 3, 34 and 38 should be pressed. For pus give treatment on lymph gland ( point No. 16 ).

Ear drop : Urine (own) is the best form of ear drops. Otherwise, take 60 ml or 50gm of edible oil. Put 1 peel of garlic in it. After the oil is warmed up, filter it and keep it in a small bottle. Use it as ear drops when necessary.

There are a few, but all are vanishingly rare these days, with OR without antibiotics 75% of patients resolve spontaneously within 48 hours anyway.

Any bacterial infection can result is septicaemia = spread into the blood stream. Intratemporal complications include mastoiditis, petrositis, labyrinthitis, and facial nerve paralysis.Intracranial complications include extradural abscess, brain abscess, subdural abscess, sigmoid sinus thrombophlebitis, otic hydrocephalus, and meningitis.
