Really bad ear problem help!!!!!?

. im a 19 F....Yesterday everything with my ears and hearing were fine, i woke up this morning, and my ears felt clogged, I could hear my own blood and heart or something. Every single sound I hear hurts my ears, with pressure or something, its like they are so sensative. I cant take my fingers out of my ears because every slight sound hurts them. i am so scared =( Its not like a pain , its more of like a pressure pain kind of thing. im CONSTANTLY wearing these drum ear mufflers to mute all sounds. The emergency room doctor said i have otitis media with effusion. but now im losing all my hearing in my left ear!! and he put me on steriods! ugh. im so scared, does this fit the diagnosis? this doesnt make much sense to me and im so scared

How awful. I have suffered from many ear infections and I know exactly what you are experiencing.

A couple of questions....
1. Did he prescribe any antibiotics?
2. Did he give you any suggestions for a decongestant?
3. Did he give you any drops?

Let me explain a little about what you have. Otitis Media is an ear infection plain and simple. It is painful and irritating. Effusion means that you have drainage coming from your ears. Probably pus (I know, gross)...but it's best to let it drain. Here are my suggestions to ease your pain for now.

1. Call and see if you can take a decongestant for the "stuffiness." Some of them will make you a little hyper, so ask the doc or the pharmacist which one they recommend.
2. Stop using ear plugs...switch to cotton. You don't want the drainage to go back down...it leads to more bacteria, more stuffiness..worse pain.
3. Take ibuprofen for pain..it has antiflammatory agents that will reduce swelling .
4. Lay on a heating pad set on low for short amounts of time on each side. This will relieve pain and stimulate drainage.
5. Try your best to keep your ears dry when you bathe or shower. Any excess moisture will only lead to more discomfort.
6. If you are not on antibiotics, question your doctor. Don't let him bully you. If your diagnosis is what you say, it is an INFECTION which needs to be treated with antibiotics.

Good luck. Try not to be scared....it will clear up. The steroids will also help with inflammation and they act pretty quickly. You will be fine!!!!

Don't panic. If you have Otitis Media with effusion means that you have an ear infection with some fluid behind your eardrum which is making it so the eardrum can't vibrate and send the signals to your brain to make you "hear". It will make your ears feel clogged. It will eventually resolve (the body will absorb the fluid) but might take several days to a week or more depending on the severity. You will probably hear some crackling and popping in your ear. This is normal too and is a sign that your ear is getting better. Put something warm (a water bottle or towel) next to your ears for some pain relief and take some Tylenol or Advil for the pain.

As the Dr. probably told you, it is a middle ear infection.
It can take quite awhile to clear up. It is not an easy ailment to deal with as you already know.
Just take your meds from the Dr. ONLY and get lots of rest.
It does absolutely fit the diagnosis. It will just take time
Good luck to you. Oh and PLEASE change your name from LOSER. I am sure you are not and it is so negative.
Get well soon.

This makes sense, and does follow the diagnosis. In layman's terms... you have fluid and infection behind your ear drum and it is causing pressure on your ear which is what is causing the pain. Take all the antibiotics and steroids. Those are good for it. ALso, take robitussin or dimatap. Look specifically for the formula that says it relieves congestion. this will aid in draining the fluid. For pain relief, you can try a heating pad or hot water bottle against that side of body. also, take a hot shower. the steam should help some... tylenol or advil for pain is ok, too. Hang in there. The hearing loss is probably temporary. if it is not better in a week, go to the doctor for follow-up care.
