ostomy is the medical term to describe an artificial opening

Colostomy to get rid of waste
tracheostomy to breathe

An ostomy can be a hard thing to deal with for some people. What about it is being found hard to deal with? Also what type of ostomy is it? Is it a colostomy? Urostomy? (the following is for colostomy and urostomy) Some people worry about a smell coming frolm the bag, there are actually bags that can if sealed properly, prevent odours from being smelled. The only time an odor would be smelled is when the bag is being changed. As for leakage, if it is properly sealed, it shouldnt leak. There are also products to help seal it, such as ekin seal. If it is about it being noticed by others, It can be hidden by some baggy shirts, etc. As for the change in body appearance, that can be hard to deal with and can take time. Some things to help with that is to realize that you are still the same person, no matter what. Some ostomy's are temporary and reversed, while others are permanant, depending the circumstances surrounding it. It can take time to adjust to having an ostomy, and everyone deals with it in their own ways. Realize what the fears are, and perhaps research things about the fears.
