Tough one: Wound will not heal, small (1/4 in) section of a surgical scar 6 months old. Suggestions?

The doc has given me plenty of suggestions, but nothing has worked. It just scabs over for a few days, the scab comes off, and the wound looks the same. I have tried vitamin E, peroxide, antibiotic cream, and zinc oxide. I also tried the sealing band aids. Also, this is an ostomy reversal scar, so the wound at one time was joined with intestinal tissue. My own theory is a small amount of intestinal tissue remains and will not heal (since it replaces itself every 3 days). Could be completely wrong, but I don't know what else to do and can't afford to take off work to see the doc again for a few weeks. Please give me your suggestions.

Negative for Diabetes as of my last blood test

No harm in applying aloe vera gel (fresh), it has immense healing properties for the skin. Just take a small piece of the leaf at a time and remove the inside gel and apply on the wound for a few day. Apply atleast 5-6 times in a day. Aloe vera acts wonderfully on the skin and has no side effects at all.

Again test yourself for diabetes. If your sugar level is high it will hamper healing.

When you see your doctor again ask about trimming the stoma, if there's any left, and creating a skin flap for closure.

Probably your wound needs drying out , sit in the sun for a little while each day, then you will notice the different. I was the same way with my wound after open heart surgery, i was adviced to do what i told you even though a little of the wound not dried properly I'm quite please with the result.

My mom has an ostomy and she had a similar problem after they did surgery to bring out her intestine. She used something called Duoderm and it really worked well.
I'll talk to my mom tomorrow and ask her for more suggestions on other things she did to heal her wounds and maybe one will work for you! Feel fre to email me nurseADN@comcast.net if you have anymore questions.
P.S. congrats on your reversal my mom wasn't that lucky kudos for you!!!

Your wound needs to heal from the inside out. It is healing the surface area, but not underneath. As u said this is an ostomy scar, it is deep and though it scabs over, it needs to heal underneath.

Dont seal it, with band aids. Talk to an experienced nurse who takes care of this kind of thing every day. They are always willing to help!! :-)

Trust me on this....most physician's are at a loss when it comes to wound care and current treatments. They are used to relying on wound care nurses in the hospital and suggestions from nurses elsewhere.

I strongly suggest that you ask for a wound care referral so that you can see a nurse who specializes in this or a clinic that specializes in wounds.

Do you have diabetes or any disease that would prevent you from healing?

I would not try things that are over the counter such as aloe vera, zinc, etc. I don't believe that they will help you.

Peroxide is NOT good to use on a wound ever. It kills good, healthy tissue. Suggest that you use soap and water or get a prescription for normal saline. Normal Saline would be the best, but it does require a prescription.

Do not give up hope. If you are healthy, there are a number of ways to heal up this wound. Might suggest getting script for an oral antibiotic, getting culture of wound....there might be a resistent bacteria that is preventing the wound from healing.

Something will work. Might take patience. Do not ignore the wound (doesn't sound like you will). Keep fighting until you get it healed up.

I wish you the very best!!!
