Why can the Atkins Diet cause Osteoporosis?

^^^^^ ????? anyone know?

oh if you don't what Osteoporosis is, it's a disease of the bone where the bones weaken

oh and btw I'm not thinking of going on it, i need to know for my corsework study I'm doing on the diet!

Lack of calcium perhaps or the minerals and vitamins that enhance calcium absorption.
There is also the worry of kidney damage as the body uses protein for energy instead of carbohydrates. The breakdown of protein for use in this way releases damaging metabolites into the bloodstream which end up in the kidneys.
Heart specialists are none to keen on the diet either.

because its a rubbish diet, i think eating healthy is a better more safe option than those fad diets that cause more bad than good

You will gain muscle mass and feel heavy if you go on it =)
you'll lose weight but it won't be fun when you feel bulky all over

Maybe because it lacks the nutrients you need to build & protect bone.
I've never been on the atkins diet but I have had anorexia and I know that was one of the causes of my Oesteroporosis. Lack of calcium and also because it stopped my periods which meant my body wasn't producing the Oestrogen hormone which is also a factor in protecting bone density.

You don't get enuf dairy on the Atkins diet.

I dont know much about the diet but it must be that it doesnt have enough calcium in it,because thats what makes bones strong,i hadnt heard about this fact about Atkins diet before so i take it that its fairly new news.

There are differing opinions about it, but studies have been done showing that people on high protein/low carb diets have higher concentrations of calcium in their urine than people following a "normal" diet. It is believed that the excess calcium in the urine comes from bone loss.

There is also a higher risk of developing kidney stones, which are also made up of calcium.

Here is one example of a study.

going on a diet means no or less nutrients for your body/bones. hence possible bone problems.

Renal failure will kill a person on the Atkins diet, way before they have to worry about osteoporosis!
Heart attacks too!
Halitosis is also a big problem for those on the Atkins diet!
That's stinky breath, for those that don't know!

Because of the lack of fiber and calcium and too much protein and iron from meats. Basically it is similar to those with Celaic Disease, an inability to process gluten, a protein in wheat, rye and barley. So those with Celiac do not eat gluten and thus get less grains and calcium as others. Also those with Celiac often have it go untreated for years and it causes malabsorbtion and malnutrition so we dont absorb calcium for years, thus leading us more likely to get osteoporosis. Atkins is similar except most ppl realize the diet is stupid and dont do long term damage to themselves---heck if I could eat gluten I would!! Bring on the bread!!! BUt for now, its Gluten Free bread for me!! :)

osteoporosis is a disease that occurs when the body is not getting enough calcium and the loss of bone density which mostly accrues in old people ages 55 and older but that had nothing to do with the Atkins diet!
