How long does fosamax stay in the body's system? I need to have dental work done and would like to stop taking it in advance, with the hopes of avoiding Osteonecrosis of the Jaw. The problem with Fosamax and other Bisphosphonates is that they stay in your body for quite a while.. About 2 years..
What you can do is stop it for 3 months and then the chances of osteonecrosis will be lowered, but will never be 0.
However, there is only few cases reported with Fosamax. Its more often leading to osteonecrosis with Intravenous bisphosphonates.
Hope that help you. I thought it was always in your system. Fosamax is deposited and stored within your bones, and stays in your body for a few years. Usually, osteonecrosis only occurs when teeth are extracted, because your bone becomes exposed. However, the actual probability of getting osteonecrosis is fairly low, less than 1%. |
