Osteoarthritis - Can you still pump iron if you have it?

OK so I go to the doctor about my rotator cuff and he says you have bicep tendon damage.... and orders an X-ray.

He gets the x-ray and he says... theres a surpirse here which I wasn't expecting because you are so young but you have osteoarthritis in this shoulder... adn then he says I will have to modify my routine... adn when I asked about cures he started talking about old people and plastic hips and stuff at which point I just glazed over... since I haven't made any retirement plans just yet.... and I was really just enjoying body-building.

I've been doing rehab exercises for about a month now... This dude is a specialist sports surgeon that I was referred to by the physio..... I am booked in for an MRI to work out if there is a tear and to see if anything to be done regarding arthritis. My friends at the gym say to save my money and do xxx or yyy exercises. Going by what I have read... they are prolly right and this dude is just looking for his next keyhole surgery victim... but I will wait for the MRI. My shoulder is useless in some directions, though.

I am 65 years old and have had osteoarthritis for years. It runs in the family. Exercise it turns out is actually very benefical to people with OA.......both stretching and weights.

You will certainly have to be on some anti inflammatory medicine and you may have to undergo physical therapy but I promise you it is worth it.

As far as pumping iron goes your Doc can refer you to a Physical Therapist or Trainer who can guide you on what to do and what not to do.

May I suggest two books....Heal your own back and Heal your own neck.

He should have given you rotator cuff strengthening exercises
usually a piece of rubber tubeing.
Osteo, isn't so bad unless you are doing or having articular damage added to weight lifting, or causing scaring in the cartlidge somehow.
He can clean it out with an arthroscopy "if" it is that bad.
Modify may have meant, strength in tone, not mass; or ease off for 6 wks.

Exercise is never bad always good, just never hurt yourself or push yourself past a bad threshold, stretch too.

Jello, good for bones and joints, glucosamine.
Ive prep'd people hundreds of times for Synvisc injections in the knee hip and shoulder. Cortisone too
More than 3 cort. injections in a yrs does DAMAGE, not help, one or 2 a yr"if" exercise dosen't work.
Ask about skelaxin it's a muscle and joint anti inflamatory, no kidney or liver probs, like long-term high volume(2000mg per day over years) Ibuprofen use.

Really you need to ask the Drx Always ask! Im an MA in orthpedics, just so you know, not the solution.
