Why won't my dentist do a simple extraction?

I need to have a middle front tooth extracted for orthodontia because it is almost completely rotated. The orthodontist referred me to my dentist to do it, but she referred me to an oral surgeon. I thought any dentist could do an extraction? Does the rotation make it more difficult or something?

I have not been told that I'll need to be "knocked out." I expect that it will be done under local anesthetic.

SOME DENTISTS JUST AREN'T COMFORTABLE DOING EXTRACTIONS SO THEY REFER OUT.

Your dentist doesn't have the proper facilities and/or the proper license to do it. Our dentist can remove teeth IF you don't need to be knocked out.

Hmmm, monksoup fails to explain how the dentist makes more money by sending you elsewhere.

Apparently the dentist was unable to perform the extraction. Beyond that only she can tell you the particulars of why. The oral surgeon might be able to tell you when you go for your consult.

Some Dentist prefer not to do extractions. Its not that they cant, all Dentist can do extractions. And also they help one another out. Thats why there are specialist and regular Dentist.

Again Dr. Albert misses the point. These ARE difficult extractions because of the rotation and the potential damage to the bone and/ or remaining teeth. It may turn out to be very easy, but the last thing you want is for your general dentist to get into the middle of it then have a problem. I love extracting teeth, but refer about 90% of them out because I don't do sedation and don't have an oral surgeon handy to bail me out if I get into trouble
