Organ donation while pregnant? |
my friend lost one kidney years ago and now her other is failing FAST, without a donor soon chances are slim she'll make it. is it possible to donate (providing i'm a match) while pregnant? Nope. No doctor would take the responsibility of performing that surgery on a pregnant woman. The surgery is harder on the kidney donor than it is the kidney recipient. Not to mention that being pregnant with only one kidney is also extremely dangerous. It is so great that you want to help your friend but right now you need to focus on what's best for your unborn child. You would also need to be sure that you were done having children before you considered donating your kidney. I am very sorry to hear that your friend is going through that. I would think that this would be very dangerous to your pregnancy. They need to use medications that are toxic to the fetus in harvesting your kidney as well as surgical stress is much worse for the donor than the recipient. The risk for a non-pregnant You say chances are slim she will make it, is she on dialysis? I am a dialysis nurse and I have several patients who have no kidneys at all, they had to have them removed for one reason or another, but as long as they are on dialysis and are compliant with their diet and fluid intake as well as medications they remain stable. I guess what I'm trying to say is she should be OK until you have the baby and then you could go from there if she is receiving treatment at this time unless there is more going on than you were able to mention health wise with your friend. |
