Do you think Organ Donation should be made compulsary after death unless you opt out?.?

I used to think not, but my nine year old son has just celebrated his sixth anniversary of receiving a successful Kidney Transplant, so now I have seen both sides of the argument.
What do you think?

Did you know that even if you hold a donor card, your next of kin can refuse to allow donations when you die!!!
So yes I agree with you. Having 2 children myself I dont think I would like the thought of having to make a decision for them to cut up my kids if they died. I think that would be a very hard decision to make, so if it was taken out of my hands then it would be better for everyone.
Good health to your son and your family :)

I think that's a very good idea. If you're strongly against it, then register your disapproval

wen ur dead ur dead u aint gunna b bothered bout being cut up and its all for a good cause i guess

I think so but then I have a donor card anyway

Best wishes to you and your son!

I'm not convinced that you can opt out of something that is compulsory??...Call me a pedant!

I've always believed that, it makes sense and I haven't heard any logical debate that would make me think otherwise

yes i absolutely do, that way it would be taken out of the next of kins hands so that they can not have to think about it, then people who do not want too can tell somebody

what would happen for children though,

I like the idea of opting out rather than opting in. I'm sure the lawyers would do battle on this one, but it makes sense. Most people never think to opt-in. Even if they want to opt-in, like me, it's not clear how to do so in every State.

i think it should just be what heppens unless you opt out or your spouse/parents object. There is really no reason to keep your organs and tissues after your dead when so many people could benefit. It seems selfish. If more people would donate, there wouldnt be other people dying on wait lists

nope ,what about if the form/card is lost?..not all people advertise they are donors!..i think its messing with nature anyway, and yes i do have kids!.body parts are taken while donor is still alive with no anaesthetic

Yes I do but I do worry as I have heard that if you have a donor card and there is a recipient waiting then it all depends on yr social status and family as to whether they put you on L/s. This is from a source that is high up in the NHS.

Def, my brother died from a brain hemorrhage and his wife wouldn,t donate. Both me and my mum were horrified as we knew this is what he wanted. Opting either out or in wouldn't have made a difference as she would have had to agree but it would have made a stronger argument.

Yes it should be. I always carry my donar card.

I think its a brilliant idea. Alot of people wouldn't though I'm sure. I just registered as an organ donor last week.

Thats fantastic. Congrats to you all & I wish you all many more anniversaries.

It is compulsary isn't it? I mean apart from them without a donor card.
Science can take most of my organs if it would help, but they are not allowed to have my eyes & my heart.

Why??
Your eyes are the key to your soul & I think they should stay with that person in order for them to rest in peace.

Maybe its just me being shallow, but shallow or not, its something I truly believe.

Organ donation should be voluntary only. There should be no law requiring everyone to be an organ donor, unless they opt out. It's another Orwellian law promoted by the Leftist nanny-state.

I am glad your son survived due to someone donating a kidney because they wanted to and not because it was compulsory to donate. A freely given gift is precious. that taken by force would be onerous. The compulsory law would allow not being a donor, but it would in effect catch a lot of people who didn't want to and simply forgot to opt out. Then after a time you would have to have religious reasons for opting out or it would not be permitted to opt out. Finally there would be no way to opt out.

i think its totally personal that question, a lot of people would not like to think that as soon as there loved ones have died there are immediately going to be harvested for organs.i mean when someone dies we want to leave than as we knew them not all cut up for other peoples needs

Congrats to you and your son, that really is wonderful.
But, may I remind everyone (at least US residents) that regardless of your beliefs, this is still a free country. A country where we get to make our own decisions and decide our futures for ourselves. Why should the government be allowed to infringe on yet one more thing in our lives? Donation is a very personal decision that should be made by each individual, not the government, and should not be forced upon people, some none the wiser, thus falling victim to something they may not necessarily want.
