Can lip biting cause oral cancer?

i have been biting my lip for who knows how long and i bite constantly even now. i stop myself (like right now) but then i start feeling tense and anxious (right now!!!) as if i need to bite it. if i keep forcing myself not to bite eventually the anxiety goes away. but when i stop concentrating on biting 3 seconds later i find myself doing it again. i used to bite really deep and get sores and even numbness all the time. now its scar tissue and tough to bite and there isnt much fleshiness to bite a good chunk. once i bit my lip so bad when i drank cold water it felt like the water was running down my chin when it wasnt. it hurts but its a relief and i kinda like it. wow im biting again... ahhh this is bad. a week ago i bit a deep chunk and it got to be a sore. i try to remember to swish my mouth w/ warm salt water everynight to help it heal. since there isnt much but scar tissue i bite the cheeks, and nibble at the scar tissue, it doesnt hurt. im use to it? so, can i get oral cancer?

well my dentist said that biting my lip, over time can cause oral cancer. because u bite it and the lip is trying to heal and if you keep biting it, it can start growing abnormal cells or something... and that i could get my lip cut out! even tho this is scary to me i still bite. idk what to believe for sure. but im going to start making an effort to quit, starting now! not like i havent tried before.. ahh but i really need to stop. so seriously, im stopping...now...PRAY FOR MEEEEEEE.. i bit again.. i have ocd or something.

Absolutely not. I promise. Cancer can only be genetic or caused by carcinogens.

I highly doubt that it can cause oral cancer, but I still suggest seeing a doctor and getting on some anti-anxiety meds since this "minimal" outlet could turn into something bigger.

yes u can cancer is caused by a repitition of damage made to a certain part of your body for example if someone punches ur arm every day for an extended period of time in the same place it kill cells thus spreading and possibly creating cancer this is a proven study it sounds not true yet plausible at the same time now this is not rare but it is plausable

Nobody can tell.
I know that some mouth cancers (according to dentists) start in the inner cheek area inside the mouth which gets bitten every now and then in the process of chewing with molars.
Every time you go to your dentist, they make it a point to observe this areas and write up their assessment of its health in your chart.

Most sources say lip or cheek biting may increase the risk of oral cancer. Some sources say it does not increase the risk. Whichever source is correct, you already know you should take steps to stop. You are leaving large areas of nonintact skin open to microorganisms.

Delta Dental Insurers list lip-biting as an oral cancer risk (Oral sores = chronic irritation = excessive quick cell growth = cancer.) http://www.deltadental.com/Public/OralHe... Insurers are usually conservative and cautious, so I would be inclined to believe them.

I am a cheek-biter. I put a hard candy or a cough drop in my mouth when I feel the urge to bite. Do not tuck the candy or cough drop between your teeth and cheek; this will eventually cause cavities.
