Gum graft tissue? Or oral cancer?

I had a gum graft done on my four lower front teeth about a year and a half ago, and now I see that on my two left teeth the graft is very lumpy and it appears as though there is an excess of scar tissue. The teeth on that side hurt as well, and my bottom front left tooth is slightly crooked (I don't know if it always was, but I just noticed it now). Could this be a form of cancer growing through, underneath, or over the graft? Or am I just being paranoid? I went to the dentist about a month ago and he took X-rays and said that everything was fine. Could something have possibly metastasized within a month? Wouldn't the X-rays have picked up on cancer if I had it? I also have TMJ, but why would it just affect that one area?

The reason I'm concerned that it could be cancer is because I was a heavy (1-pack-a-day) smoker for four years, but quit about five months ago.

Grafts have to consolidate, and sometimes they consolidate more in some places, adn less in others, producing a degree of lumpiness.
