How painful is oral cancer?

How painful is oral cancer?

very-very much

Speaking from experience, not so horrible.
It does depend on what type you have and what type of treatment will be done.
Surgery wasn't too bad but the radiation was.
It was worth it.

I had cancer on one tonsil and on a lymph node next to it. It didn't hurt when I was diagnosed, it just felt funny when I swallowed.

I went through 30 doses of radiation, five per week, and a mild form of chemo once a week. For the first couple weeks, it was nothing, except I turned pale green for about 24 hours after chemo. But I felt fine.

As the radiation started shrinking my tumors, it left scars, scabs, inside my throat. That was painful, like a bad sore throat. Plus my gag reflex went hyper-sensitive, and I threw up a lot. Eventually I could not take in food or water by mouth, so they put in a feeding tube, right near my navel. So I could take in water and nutrition that way, a big relief.

After weeks and weeks, the scars/scabs in my throat got better. Then I had surgery on my neck, and my neck was stiff for a while, but not too bad. Then I learned now to eat again, and had the feeding tube removed, and now a year or so later, I'm fine. I'm thankful. I had great doctors and nurses and technicians and friends taking care of me.
