Can opiates provide recreational and pleasent effects even at medicinal dosages?

i was onced prescribed percocet after a surgery of 5mg.

not very high, yet i still felt somewhat warm and even some euphoria. and at a completely medicinal dose. but not overpowering whatsoever. it was just something i noticed with the effects

is this very common?

if so then why do abusers take crazy amounts of the opiates if they can be acheived at safe doses?

and no i never abused my percocet, so PLEASE save me the lecture. i swear whenever a drug is mentioned on YA! immediately people assume the person is consipring to use.

I was started on Fentanyl and for three days I was vomiting. Not sure if this was the euphoria you are speaking about. However they gave me an injection to stop the vomiting and all settled down. One weekend I had to phone the Doc who told me to put another patch on! Double the dose! I did as requested and passed out. Is that euphoria? I know drugs affect people differently but a lot is a 'state-of-mind'. Years ago when my Nephew was but 16 I took him to the Bar and gave him a soft drink, but told him it was Alcohol. After the fourth bottle we walked home and he was proud to tell his Grandmother that he was *issed! He believed he was drinking alcohol and because he believed it was euphoric! That is why we have the placebo affect, because people read about drugs on YA and 'assume' they are having a high, but in fact they are not. Therefore when the reality dawns, well they increase the dose and so on. I drive my car, operate the lawn mower, do many ordinary everyday things on my drugs: Fentanyl, Valium and Lyrica but do not feel high, or euphoric, just normal. Feeling normal is so much better than being in severe acute pain 24/7. So the combination of drugs has stopped the pain and I am back to feeling normal, although the disease is still ongoing. Hope that helps. Best of Luck

well think about this. at a medicinal dose, if they could get a small amount of euphoria, why wouldn't the abuser take large amounts to get even MORE of that 'good feeling'?

yes, that is a usual effect of taking the prescribed amount. I have in the past abused pain pills, but I don't anymore and will not again. This is a question I have asked myself, after the fact of abusing them? Why did I take more then prescribed, when you don't need too, if you like the effect it has, one is plenty. When you take more, it is a waste of pills, it is bad for your liver, it can cause dependence, along with getting a headache. The high isn't that much better, actually it could be, but after what I have experienced, the prescribed amount is much better, even if your taking it for the side effect. The reason people take crazy amounts is that you build a tolerance after a couple of days of taking it regularly, and you need more to achieve the same effect. So, if you don't take it everyday you can keep your tolerance down, for awhile, but it's bound to go up and you'll need more and then your body needs it or you get sick and go through withdrawals. Best to take occasionally.

The longer you take pain meds the higher your tolerance for the medication becomes. It takes more of the same medication to achieve the same effect that you originally got from a smaller dose.
