Opiates addiction was treated with Methadone at a hospital! What a freakin Nightmare! He needs to get off the methadone, but the IBS will be bad again... Anyone that has IBS... Any real suggestions? He also suffers from severe acid reflux. My son has been on and tried all commercial & prescription meds for the acid reflux! That is just another condition besides the major one... IBS with diarrhea. A personal visit to a naturopath or homeopath would be in order. I don't believe that peppermint and aloe are the best solutions in this case. I'm afraid that they would mask symptoms instead of balancing the body. Normally, I would recommend these two therapies, but that doesn't feel right in this situation.
You can check with your local health food store to see if there is a naturopath and homeopath that they would recommend. These two therapies may be used in conjunction with one another, just make sure both therapists know all he's taking. If you're lucky, you can find a naturopath skilled in homeopathy.
If your health food store cannot recommend either one, you can check the sites below to find them. I have worked with several graduates of Trinity College of Natural Health and been quite satisfied with their knowledge.
Please feel free to email me if you have further questions. He needs Karo syrup if he gets constipated. and pepcid Ac to take before eating rubbish foods. imodiome ad works wonderfully and if his rearend is sore from going to much tucks medicated pads help with the soreness First you must be sure it is IBS and not colitis.....and a lot of it has to do with diet.....seek professional advice when it comes to someone's health....a doctor, dietician or even an herbalist. best of luck and health to you and your son Make sure to test that it's not Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns Disease, the former could potentially be life threatening if left untreated. Immodium AD is a medicine which is made from opiates, but has none of the severe addiction side effects and doesn't affect the brain. I've heard aloe vera juice works well. My brother uses enteric coated peppermint for his IBS. You can find it at any health food store. hello,
There's a lot going on here & part of the story seems to be missing. ... where is your adult son who should be looking himself for help ... and opiates are not usually prescribed for GI disorders, so what has happened here ... possibly there is a not-mentioned problem complicated by severe IBS with diarrhea.
These latter are serious. Condition did not appear overnight & healing the GI will take time plus hard work. IF, and only IF, your son makes this choice for himself.
Best step would be to contact the most highly-accredited college of naturopathy you can find in your area. Ask if their leading profs in nutrition, naturopathy have private practices. Failing that (can't afford that) the school is likely to have an inexpensive intern clinic with their most advanced students who will, in turn, consult their leading profs. One way or the other your son will find help.
The broad general approach would be to heal the GI through diet modification, lifestyle changes and judicious use of herbs & homeopathic products.
The first stage would be to control the acute inflammation. There are many herbs and foods that will help. In a second stage, once the patient has stabilized, the goal would be to heal the intestinal tract with a combination of healing plants, proper dietetics and an ever-improving relationship with food.
Does this adult son live with you? Get him to move out. How is your own GI? Can you start nurturing yourself? You may want to start him on an acidopholus mixture ( probiotics) 3 capsules taken 3 times per day with each meal.Buy the best one that you can afford from the health food store. He may have a serious overgrowth of yeast in his digestive system and that should be addressed.Chinese medicine is a miracle cure for hard to treat cases. Acupuncture can help with the addiction and acid reflux as well as help to rebalance the digestive tract . The neat thing about it is that they can treat several conditions at the same time! You'd have to take your son a minimum of twice per per week in the beginning and then less later on.Don't give up hope. Help is out there if you're willing to try an alternative method.Traditional doctors sometimes can only do so much.I hope he feels better soon. well i suffer from IBS as well, but with constipation not diarrhea..
for the pain .. i use Librax & Duspatalin ..
for the acid reflux .. i use Ranitidine .. or Omeprazole ..
for diarhhea .. he can use imodium .. but its not recommended to use it for long terms .. so he better seek a dr. advice on this 1 ..
if ur lookin for natural remedies .. well mint is very helpful .. specially if he suffers from bloating or nausea .. just boil some water .. add mint .. cover the cup .. leave it for 5-7 mins .. then let him drink it ..
and he needs to make some diet changes .. like staying away from fatty foods such as french fries .. milk products like cheese or ice cream ..
chocolate .. alcohol .. caffeine (found in coffee and some sodas) ..carbonated drinks .. all these things might make the IBS worse .. but this differs from patient to patient ..
so he should find out what certain food that cause him the problem .. by writing down what he eats during the day .. what sypmtoms he has .. and when do they occur .. what foods always make him feel bad ..
one more thing .. large meals can cause cramping and diarrhea in people with IBS. If this happens to him,he should try eating 4 or 5 small meals a day. Or, have his usual 3 meals, but eat less at each meal..
and dont forget the stress might trigger the sypmtoms of IBS .. so he gotta learn how to reduce stress ..
that's all i have in mind for now ..
hope it'll help .. You might want to consider a trial of no gluten, found in wheat, oats, rye, and a few other grains, and no dairy. It is a tough diet, but it has changed my life. Did the dr do a bowel biopsy? If not, he hasn't been properly assessed. Peppermint Plus by Enzymatic Therapy often works wonders for IBS patients. It is certainly worth a try. I have had great success with it. OK, NATURAL WAY IS HERE AND IT WILL WORK FOR HIM. STOP WITH THE DOC'S WAY BECAUSE IT NOT GOING TO WORK. THIS SYSTEM WILL HELP WITH IBS AND ACID REFLUX. AT THE SAME TIME AND GET HIM BACK TO NORMAL. THIS IS A REAL SUGGESTION, PLEASE TRY, SO HE CAN GET ON WITH HIS LIFE. METHADOME IS GOING TO KILL HIM. ALL NATURAL, WHEN YOU E-MAIL ME I'LL HAVE ALL INFO READY. THEN WE CAN WORK TOGETHER ON HEALING HIM. I HELP ALOT OF PEOPLE WITH HEALTH ISSUES AND I HAVE A GREAT TRACK RECORD. LOOKING FORWARD TO HELPING HIM.
CALL_MARKYPOO@YAHOO.COM In general I would tell him
1. Make sure he knows his triggers. He should experiment with eliminating certain foods from his diet for at least a week. Dairy is a very, very common problem (not just the lactose but the protein as well). Others are wheat/oats/barley/rye, soy, caffeine, insoluble fiber, and in my case, it was MSG and MSG-containing additives like malt extract, "natural flavors", and soy protein.
He can keep a food and symptom diary to see if he can find any connections over time between his symptoms and what he eats. Remember there can be a delayed reaction! If he *really* wants to go for it, you can do a BRA diet (only plain bananas, rice and applesauce) and slowly add foods back in one at a time until you find the culprit(s).
The acid reflux/GERD can be managed by diet changes and herbal supplements. I'm not as familiar with the GERD diet, but you can find info on that fairly easily - basically avoiding acid-producing foods, food before bed, etc. Has he had an EGD done recently to make sure there's no esophageal damage from the reflux?
2. Stress elimination does help - acupuncture provides relief for some people, massages, exercise, whatever works for you. Even sleep aids - I find those long sleepless nights of worrying wreak havoc on my digestion.
3. Find a good support group to get ideas and have a forum for his questions - I LOVE the group on the IBS board at WebMD.com. The people there are very knowledgeable, wise, and always willing to answer your stupidest questions =) If it wasn't for those folks' help, I'd probably still be suffering everytime I ate. If he's not internet savvy see if there are any community groups - it's immensely comforting to know you're not alone, if nothing else.
4. Probiotics ("good" bacteria) do help a lot of people. Get a good one (eg Digestive Advantage, Culturelle, Kirkman Labs, Trader Joes, etc.) and try another one if the first doesn't do anything. Different brands work for different people.
5. Soluble fiber (not insoluble fiber) supplements - psyllium, pectin, metamucil, etc. I'd avoid the artificially flavored ones - the chemicals don't do you any favors. I get generic psyllium and grapefruit pectin capsules online or from a local health store. Try the diet described on http://www.helpforibs.com . It's pretty easy to follow, and involves eating a lot of soluble fiber and less insoluble fiber- it's all explained on the site and costs nothing.
6. Avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. They often cause or aggravate digestive troubles, among other evils. The Homeopathic Remedy NUX VOMICA 30, half hour before meals will cure your son's IBS in a short time without any side effects or complications and its totally non addictive !
Take Care and God Bless you ! Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a complex disorder in which the intestines lose their ability to efficiently move their contents. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, headaches, fatigue, depression, anxiety, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. These can be triggered by stress, diet, emotional factors, hormone levels, and drugs.
Let's talk acupuncture. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can offer a safe, effective and natural way to address IBS. Acupuncture is based upon 5,000 years of clinical study and observation. This holistic healthcare system looks at the body differently than Western medicine. The body according to Chinese medicine is a garden that should be cultivated and maintained in order to grow well and remain healthy. This occurs when all the organ and meridian systems are working together and balanced. When balanced, the body produces the correct quality and quantity of Qi energy, which is vital to support good health.
This is very different from Western perspective which usually looks at your body as a machine, in which each organ is separate from the others, and worn out parts can be replaced and broken tubes patched.
How does your garden grow? According to Chinese medical theories the Spleen is the organ in charge of digestion and assimilation of foods and liquids. The Spleen is like a garden that needs to be properly nourished and cared for in order to produce a healthy, robust harvest. This harvest is called Qi, and is the energy that poweres the body, and delivers nutrients to nourish your organs, cells, and tissues.
If your Spleen-garden isn't properly cared for, the body's energy levels will not be supported and illness may occur.
The Spleen is easily affected and weakend by poor eating habits or diet, antibiotics, excessive worry, or a weak consitution. When a weakend Spleen cannot metabolize or break down food efficiently, "Dampness" appears in the body. Dampness, in a sense, occurs when rotting, undigested food sits in your gut, causing a variety of symptoms. If Dampness "rises" to your head, you may experience dull, full headaches, and feel foggy, cloudy, and unable to concentrate. Over time, Dampness may "sink" downward, accumulating in your Large Intestine. This leads to bloating, fullness, and loose stools.
Another function of the Spleen is to produce Blood from the food it breaks down and to convert it into usuable energy to power your body. Therefore, not having enough Blood will affect the normal function of your Heart. This can cause palpitations, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
In Chinese medicine the Liver is associated with your emotional state, and digestion. Stress and anger directly influence the function of your Liver. Alcohol, drug use, or a poor diet further compromise it's function. When this happens, your Liver energy overflows, in a figurative sense, and attacks the Spleen. This is an easy battle to win if your Spleen is already weak. The result can be stress-induced IBS.
If your Liver is compromised, you may experience alternating diarrhea and constipation, as well as bloating, gas, headaches, and dull pain. In this case, your Liver is the root of the problem, and your Spleen the secondary problem.
Another scenario is that your Kidney Yang could be unbalanced. Kidney Yang is energy that provides warmth for your body. This energy warms up your Spleen to aid it in the digestion and breakdown of food. If your Kidney is compromised, you will experience early-morning diarrhea and possibly bladder incontinence, cold limbs, weak knees, and a sore back.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can offer a clear picture of the root imbalances that can lead to IBS. When you meet with your practitioner, he or she will discover what organ systems are involved. They may also suggest any number of adjunct therapies to hasten your healing, such as, herbs, changes in diet, breathing techniques, or exercise.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine provide safe, natural, drug-free and effective ways to address IBS. The focus is upon achieving a balance of body and mind. |
