Question for doctors or nurses. can opiates cause psychosis?

the other day i asked on here which drugs can cause schizophrenia.

i knew about amphetamines,hallucinogens, and cocaine use can cause it.

but two of the answers i got was that opiates and antidepressants will cause it too. but did they just misinterpret it, and meant in the rare case of a psychotic reaction to them? sort of like an allrgic reaction?

or did they mean that the drugs themselves will cause schizophrenia?

do you mean drug induced psychosis? as in chronic abuse from drugs where the psychosis wears off once the drugs do?

Antidepressants will not cause schizophrenia. As for opiates, if misused it can cause symptoms simialar to, but not the diseaser. Schizophrenia is a disease!!! Please get this right people. It is not a symptom.

Opiates can cause psychosis--not necessarily schizophrenia.

First, I'm only in school for psychiatry and not finished yet.
Opiates can cause psychosis but only at very high doses. Abuse, for example, not normal Ritalin dosage.
Anti-depressants typically aren't linked with schizophrenia, unless the person is already exhibiting some traits; in rare cases it can make it worse.

ANY drug that can cause an alternation in consciousness can cause psychological problems.
