What is the difference between Ultram ER and Percocet they both have opiates in them? |
can anyone tell me the difference between them I have been on several websites and one will say it is a narcotic and the other will say it is a non-narcotic but they both have opiates in them so what is the difference? my doc gave them to me and he gave me percocet for in between for severe pain thanks for the help Percocet is a mix of Oxycodone and Tylonel. This is a true opioid mixed with a pain reliever. It binds to the opiod receptors in the brain. Ultram ER actually affects how your brain receives pain where as Percocet will affect the brain as well as the whole body for pain relief. Percocet is a narcotic because it contains oxycodone. Ultram ER is not a narcotic and the generic name is tramadol. Ultram itself has been generic for a while, but the ER version is newer. Ultram isn't even a controlled substance, though some insurances will still have policy limits. They are nsaids, the Ultram is not strong enough on it's own so your doc has given the Percocet for the breakthrough pain. I have taken both, as well as Vioxx, Celebrex, Vicodin, Neourotin, Tramadol, Amitryptiline, and now I take Methadone. i have a book on prescription drugs and it says perks due contain opiates and ultram does not.perks are for severe pain and ultram is for moderate to mild.i was on perks and hydrocodone for two years.please be careful, they are very addictive,i am now taking a medication to help me get off the opiates.i am now prescribed the ultram in the place of my narcotic pain reliver. Ultram ER is a long acting medication. It is not a true opiate or opioid, but research suggests it binds to the opioid receptors in the brain. The Percocet is a true opiate. It is fast acting and gives immediate relief. If I had to guess, I would say your probably supposed to take the Ultram twice a day every day, but only take the Percocet if needed. That's similar to my regimine-- I take Oxycontin 40 mgs twice a day whether I have pain or not, then I take 2 Oxy IR every 4 hours ONLY if I need them. If you don't have pain, you don't have to take the Percocet. Ultram by itself, however, is one of the mildest of painkillers... really comparable to Aleve or Advil, so don't be afraid or ashamed to take the Percocet if you need to. If you take it exactly as prescribed there is a very small chance of addiction. |
