Can eating poppy seeds make you test positive for opiates?

Can eating too many poppy seeds in foods like bakery products cause a positive result for opiate testing? I once heard this, is it true, or just another urban myth?

It's true I went to rehab and this is what they taught.
Poppy seeds come from the same plant that is used to make opium (and morphine, heroin, etc.), scientific name: Papaver somniferum.

I think that you would have to eat a massive amt of poppy seeds for it to show up on a drug test. I don't think an occasional poppy seed muffin would hurt. But yeah, I've heard the same thing.

It's an urban myth. Trust me, I do drug tests on people all the time as part of their preemployment physicals and so many people try to use this excuse it's not funny. Same with pot, "Oh I don't smoke but I was at a party last night where people were." "officer, I only had 2 beers".

I think it can. Urine tests for opiates are very sensitive. I had a colleague who had regular drug testing and was told to void poppy seeds to avoid false positive tests.
