What is the difference b/w opiates and opioids?

In addition to the first answer,
whilst opiates refer to the natural alkaloids within opium, Opioids refer to either the semi-synthetic drugs like codeine, oxycodone, heroin etc. or the purely synthetic like fentanyl, meperidine(demerol).

(Even though small amounts of codeine are found in the leaves of the poppy plant, the amounts are so small that it wouldn't be economically feasible to produce commercial codeine from it. Instead, Codeine is synthesized from Morphine thus putting it in the opioid category.

Opiates are the psychoactive chemicals that come directly from the opium plant, opioids are synthetic versions of those.

Opiates: morphine, codeine
Opioids: hydrocodone, oxycodone

(there are more thant that)
