Whats the difference between optometry and ophthalmology?

Whats the difference between optometry and ophthalmology?

=the main difference here is surgery. There are huge differences between the two here in the US vs England, including their titles! If I remember correctly an Opthamologist in England is refered to as Mister rather than Doctor!

Optometry is the practice or profession of examining the eyes, by means of suitable instruments or appliances, for defects in vision and eye disorders in order to prescribe corrective lenses or other appropriate treatment. While, ophthalmology is the branch of medical science dealing with the anatomy, functions, and diseases of the eye.

An optomitrist makes and fits glasses.

An opthalmologist is a medical doctor and examines eyes and prescribes glasses, contacts, etc. as well as others treatments for eye diseases and conditions.

optomotrists fit glasses... ophthalmologists are medical eye doctors... can do glasses and surgeries, etc

Optometry is the health care profession concerned with examination, diagnosis, and treatment of the eyes and related structures and with determination and correction of vision problems using lenses and other optical aids.
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine which deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual pathways, including the eye and brain. The word ophthalmology comes from the Greek roots ophthalmos meaning eye and logos meaning word; ophthalmology literally means "The science of eyes." As a discipline it applies to animal eyes also, since the differences from human practice are surprisingly minor and are related mainly to differences in anatomy or prevalence, not differences in disease processes. By convention the term ophthalmologist is more restricted and implies a medically trained specialist. Since ophthalmologists perform operations on eyes, they are generally categorized as surgeons.
