What's the difference between Optometry and Ophthalmology?

I need to see one or the other but I'm not sure what the difference is.

Optometrists (Optometry) are people who are trained to fit you for glasses. they are not doctors.

Ophthalmologists (Ophthalmology) are doctors. they can prescribe medicines, do surgeries, and are generally much more educated than Optometrists.

Hope Im correct on this... Optometry is the practice of fitting glasses, contacts, Eye testing, all the mechanical stuff

Ophthalomology is the practice of diagnosing and treating diseases of the eye.

Optometrists prescribe glasses. Ophthalmologists can prescribe medicines and deal with diseases of the eye.

Optometry....the art of testing the eyes for eyeglasses. Ophthalmology...branch of medicine dealing with diseases of the eye, etc. The latter is a MD. the first one not. However I have had my best exams and gotten fitted better for glasses by an Optometrist.

Optometry:eye examining and lens prescribing: the practice of examining eyes in order to determine levels of vision and then prescribing and supplying any necessary corrective lenses
