The cornea is the clear part of the eye. The outer surface of the normal cornea is covered by a thin sheet of tissue called "epithelium". A corneal abscess occurs when bacteria or fungus enter the cornea through an injury in the epithelium. The epithelium may heal too quickly and essentially "seal" the bacteria or fungus inside the cornea. The bacteria or fungus grown within the cornea and from an abscess.
