Surgical oncology?

can surgical oncologists give chemotherapy also or they can only do surgical treatmant.
also, tell me that after doing ur superspecialisation in surgican oncology, u can treat cancer any where in the body or a particular part

Why not?The afternoon's going slowly.

oncologists are usually physicians who diagnose and treat cancers usually with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Surgeons can also operate on patients with cancers.
A gynaecologist would operate if you had cancer of the cervix
an orthopedic surrgeon if you had bone cancer etc,
Surgeons operate on a range of conditions but oncologists only treat cancers

There is a field called surgical oncology in which the surgeon specializes in operating on cancer. There are both pediatric and surgical oncology specialists. The surgical oncologist would be considered the 'tool' of the primary pediatric or adult oncologist . . they often work in tandem together to treat a patient. Thus, the patient has a primary oncologist who co-ordinates all the treatment and health care needs of the patient. Which may include contacting specialists for radiation treatment or for surgery. The primary oncologist orders the chemotherapy, determines treatment options, and consults with a radiology oncologist and a surgical oncologist about radiation and/or surgery.

It would be rare in the US for a primary oncologist to also have the time to practice surgery and than also offer radiation. But, I am unsure what the situation would be in different countries.

From what I understand though, while a primary oncologist may do some surgery they usually do not. But, a surgical oncologist may on occasion take on the treatment of a primary care patient.

The three disciplines from MedicineNet.com:
Medical oncology -- the treatment of cancer with medicine, including chemotherapy.

Surgical oncology -- the surgical aspects of cancer including biopsy, staging and surgical resection of tumors.

Radiation oncology -- the treatment of cancer with therapeutic radiation. (Radiation oncology is also called radiation therapy or radiotherapy.)

The only surgical subspecialty (in the US at least) that combines surgery and chemotherapy is gynecologic oncology. It is not uncommon for these surgical oncologists to administer chemotherapy and perform surgery. This surgical subspecialty is limited to tumors of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva.
