Should we take any precaution in embracing a person who is being treated with radiation(oncology) on his head? |
He's got a blocked artery somewhere in the head. He is also an out patient so we have to carry him to the hospital radiation room for 22 days. he's quite old, movement is minimal so we handle him to and after the treatment. We have to literally embrace him to move him. Don't worry, he's not radioactive! The radiation does not stay in the body so you have nothing to worry about. Just be careful so that you don't hurt HIM...he may experience more pain and have a weakened immune system. no special precautions other than those of common sense. I don't believe this is an issue... is there an implant of some sort? The only precautions you really need are those that make sense. He's not going to make you ill, so don't be afraid to do the embrace. Secondly, he may be sensative to be as gentle as possible, but don't be afraid to be firm and stable. Thirdly, touch and hug alot! Cancer patients get to feeling like "untouchables" sometimes because relatives become afraid to do more harm than good. So especially considering his advanced age... make the time you have quality time with lots of love as much as you can personally manage.
