Leukocytosis and elevated neutrophils? |
My blood work has come again and again (being this my sixth blood work) with this result : Recurring leukocytosis and elevated neutrophils the nurse finally called and they have refered me to an hematology/oncology specialist....although that is great news I am going to be seen by a specialist yippiiii but my most concern was never answerd by my doctor....i did in fact asked her upfront if It was a possibility for me to have developed leukemia. Due to the fact that it has been close to my family (my aunt) and i happen to know the blood is similar results to mine but I wanted to know. Never answer. Instead im called with this result and a phone number to call....which of course i am because the sooner the better. But can anybody please explain to me what this means?..thanks soooo much!! Leukocytosis can be due to several things. I assume of course that they have ruled out infection which is the obvious cause. Leukemia is always at the back of the mind, but how high are you WBC's? If they are just mildly elevated I wouldn't suspect this. The hematologist will likely look at your cells under the microscope - leukemia cells look different. If he/she suspects this, then you will have a bone marrow biopsy performed. A lot of times people have elevated white counts due to an inflammatory or reactive process. Smoking is one of the biggest culprits that can do this. I wouldn't assume the worst just yet. Let them complete the evaluation on you. mild leucocytosis can be anything. Your answere depends on how high you white count is and how the cells look lke under the microscope. good luck The resulst could mean a lot of things, like an infection, but if you are being referred to a specialist you could have had a high cancer marker concentration. |
