Can you get too much Omega 3 fatty acids during pregnancy? |
if so, how much would you have to take? could you get too much just by eating a lot of foods high in Omega 3s? in one day or over the course of days?, or would you need to take a supplement to "over dose" on it? i ask because i realized that yesterday i ate hot cereal with flax seed & walnuts (touts it's omegas); a small serving of salmon; a large glass of omega enhaced soy milk... and took an omega 3 supplement (prescribed by my OB, but she doesn't really ask how i eat) Omega 3s are essential for proper brain development for the baby. So, if it's ok with your doctor, I would definitely take a supplement. I don't think you can OD on reasonable intake. So, if you take a whole bottle, sure that's going to be bad. But a fish oil capsule a day probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Talk to your doctor about which supplement is best though. You'll want the best quality capsule, with the fewest additives and fillers--they can vary widely. I don't think you can overdose on it,but I don't think to much of it is good for you. Too much in the form of supplements will give you diarrhea and make you sick. You can't get too much by eating fish. If you're pregnant, though, you should eat a healthy balanced diet and not take supplements without talking to your doc. You should be eating at least twice a week a food with omega 3 like salmon , even mayonaise have omega 3 which is good for the baby so his brain will start to develope and be smart. No, you can't overdose on Omega 3. You couldn't possibly eat enough. But then you need the best balanced diet you can have for you and baby. Baby will take every vitamin it requires from your body so you have to eat for you & your health and baby will take all it wants by osmosis. Remember the 5 food groups & eat what you can and spread your meals out over the day. Please discuss with your Doctor and not over the internet. If you don't agree with your Doctor then I'm sure he can recommend another one for you. Stay well, pregnancy is not a sickness, it's a wonderful state of wellbeing and happiness. I was 132 lbs when I got pregnant first time and blossomed to 156 lbs.
