It will b appreciable if u can describe sme advantages n disadvantages of taking Omega-3 fatty acids!.....
Any information about Omega-3 supplements is prefferable....
Thank u!... I had tried SALMON OMEGA-3 TABLET( A product from AMWAY) While a person can be allergic to almost anything, being allergic to omega-3's is very very rare...because the natural diet of humans since humans were humans contained large amounts of omega-3 essential fatty acids. They are "essential" because we must have them to be healthy, and we can't make them in our bodies, we have to eat them.
You didn't mention what kind of Omega-3s you tried, you may be reacting to something else in the capsule, not the omega-3.
There are 6 forms of Omega-3s, but the ones most important to us are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These are found in ocean sources, like oily fish (sardines, salmon) Krill (the food whales eat) different algaes, etc. The Omegas come from the bottom of the food chain, and larger things eat it...fish can't make it in their bodies, either. Most fish oil capsule are made from a small fish netted off the coast of Chile.
Another form of omega-3 is found in land sources. Flax oil, purslane (a common garden weed!) chia (yes, the kind that is used in those "chia pets") and several other plants contain Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) Grass fed meats, and eggs from "free range" chickens also contain ALA.
Humans can usually convert the ALA form into the EPA and DHA forms. The conversion ratio is quite low...it takes about 10 units of ALA to convert to 1 unit of EPA, and 20 for 1 unit of DHA. Some people don't convert even that well.
We (homo sapiens) have been around for at least 300,000 years. Our natural diet for most of that time included a large amount of omega-3s. There is some speculation that the reason we grew those big fancy brains was because we ate a lot of omega-3s. Another fatty acid, Omega-6 is also "essential", but the average diet has plenty of that. An important thing is the ratio of omega=3s to omega-6s. The diet we ate for most of that 300K years had about 1 part omega-3 to about 2 parts of omega-6. Our recent (the last 50 years or so) diet has increased the ratio to as much as 1 part O-3 to 30 parts of O-6's.
This is not a good thing.
This imbalance is strongly implicated in all sorts of degenerative conditions, like high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease,MS, arthritis and Alzheimer's. Lack of Omega-3s is implicated in depression, bipolar, OCD, autism, ADHD, post-partum depression and schizophrenia. Stretch marks, weak and brittle nails, poor wound healing and cellulite are found with high Omega-6 and low Omega-3 diets.
The advantages of increasing Omega-3s, while lowering Omega-6's are basically a reverse of those condiitions listed above!
Lower blood pressure, decreased risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol (less LDL and more HDL) lower risk of Alzheimers (a large study showed a 60% decrease in Alzheimers risk if people ate one fish meal per week!) better immune system function, less depression and ADHD symptoms, less blood platelet "stickiness", improved nail and hair health, more supple skin, less cellulite (although to get this benefit it's best to avoid trans-fats, too. Trans fats should be avoided anyway!)
Keep in mind that omega-3s are not "medicine" any more than water could be called "medicine" for dehydration. It is food, a very basic and necessary food that has been systematically taken out of the "western" diet.
One of the best ways to get the good Omegas is with fish oil capsules. Virtually all of them are "molecularly distilled" and contain no mercury or other contaminants. People often have a short period of "fish burps" when they start taking them, but that goes away within days as your body remembers how to digest them. Some people keep them in the freezer until they take them, and this helps.
If you ate one-fifth of a can of Wild Alaskan Salmon, you would be getting about the same amount of omega-3s as 4 one gram fish oil capsules.
One of the very best books on this is by Dr. Andrew Stoll, director of Psychophamacology at McLean Hospital, and a Harvard faculty member, titled "The Omega-3 Connection". Dr. Stoll conducted one of the first studies of omega-3s and bipolar disorder. http://www.amazon.com/Omega-3-Connection...
Most negative effects of omega-3s are associated with blood thinning drugs, because omega-3 is a natural blood thinner. A few medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, can be aggravated by omega-3s, too.
A good website to see the various interactions, benefits and more is http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsSupplement... I heard you take omega 3 (fish oil) was for arthritis. why are you taking it? Are you alergic to fish? I'm not sure of the size of the Omega 3 molecule,so I would say its possible. My natural instinct would say you might be allergic to something in the pill, but it's not the Omega 3 oil itself. It is probably a fish protein that was left over when they purify the fish oil. Seafood is highly allergenic, and usually a protein is the cause of allergies. Maybe you are allergic to fish, or the other ingredients in the tablet. Change to a non fish omega, like flax seed oil. |
