Are the omega-3 supplements I'm taking useless?

My doctor is having me take 3000 mg of Natrol brand omega-3 fatty acid fish oil (molecularly distilled and from sardines and anchovies). I recently started seeing another doctor who told me that omega-3 fatty acid supplements aren't as effective as getting it naturally from fish, so is there really any point to my taking the supplements? (I take them for general heart health, and for depression) My new doctor seems to think the supplements will do little or no good in the long run. Any thoughts?

Actually, that's not entirely true. Some people believe that any supplement should come from the whole source (which your newer doctor obviously believes), but with fish oil, it's a LOT safer to take softgels of fish oil because they are cleaner.

Fish from the ocean may have trace amounts of many heavy metals that have been dumped in the ocean, so eating a lot of fish like that may be very bad for your health. With fish oil, they are cleaned, processed, and distilled to remove those trace contaminants.
Aside from that, there's the fact that you have to eat a lot of fresh fish (uncooked is better for the fish oil, but less safe in many cases) to get the amount of fish oil in a softgel.

Different people (doctors and non-doctors) have varied opinions on whether it's better to get something from it's source or processed from that source.... and oftentimes, it varies depending on the ingredient. Ultimately, fish is better from a purified source.

i think you should try this! when i stopped eating refined sugar, i got really skinny.
