Does occupational therapy helps adhd children focus more?

Does occupational therapy helps adhd children focus more?

The short answer is yes.

But, the question you should be asking is HOW an occupational therapist can help a child? You see, there is a therapy technique called "Sensory Integration" and it can be very helpful for students with ADHD to help them focus. The idea behind the theory is that children with ADHD have either over-reactive or under-reactive sensory systems. An occupational therapist can help you discover what sensations are calming for the child and what sensations may be alerting. The trick is finding out what makes each student function at his/her best. Some students need to take periodic movement breaks throughout the day. Others function very well if they are simply allowed to chew gum in class. It is different for everyone, and it is something you should definitely look into if you want to help a child with ADHD to focus more.

Good luck. I hope you find the answers you are looking for.

YES...my nephew is doing a bit well now

Definitely, provided the child has the ability to focus to some extent in the first place. I am one who definitely believes that there is a place for medication in the the treatment of juevenile and adult ADHD. All the panicky bad press given to ADHD medications I venture to guess comes from people who have never had the disorder. I had it as a child and as an adult. As a child I was NOT hyperactive, as long as a kid is quiet, adults are happy. It's the child bouncing off the walls who attracts the attention; try to imagine that the manifestation of physical activity is an example of how that child's mind and thoughts are working. Not only do adults want the child to quiet down, but the child has no or little control, and it is very troubling for the child who has not the years of experience or ability to comprehend psychodynamics, to live within a mind and body that is acting impulsively fairly constantly. So, screaming at the child rarely works, throwing a beer bottle at them is really not the answer, nor is lighting incense and chanting going to make the problem go away. A good healthy diet is a good place to start, and organization and stability will help, but now that we move an average of every 3 1/2 years can challenge the concepts of stability.
