What is occupational therapy?

What is occupational therapy?

OT is a diverse field. There are many areas that an OT can specialise in. We work with children and adults/elderly. OT is generally concerned with improving peoples participation and competence in everyday activities (occupations). Occupations are not just work. They are all the things that people do with their time in a day. This includes work, leisure and self care activities such as cooking, brushing your teeth, going to the bathroom.
The OT enables the client by facilitating improvement in ability, or by modifying the environment to facilitate improvement. What an OT can do for you depends on where you are having difficulties. Since this is posted in mental health, the type of OT you are looking for is probably not to do with a physical condition, such as burns, scars/wounds, a disability such as rheumatoid arthritis, paraplegia, ms, cardiac condition, etc.
An OT in the mental health setting may help with various techniques for reintegration in the social community, help with medication management, assisting the person to live independantly, developing compensatory techniques where necessary (among MANY other things, completely specific to the individual. OT is a completely client centred practice. That means we work on what you classify as important to you).
We aim to help people become more independant by facilitating their improvement in the skills that they need to maintain and enjoy life. OTs work in a number of settings, including hospital, outpatient, community health, mental health centres, paediatric, respite, palliative care and more.
I hope that you find what you are looking for here.
