Do Occupational Therapist administer and do therapy, or do they just do paperwork???

PLEASE!! an ot or ota answer from personal experience. im a sophmore in high school. whats ur job like????

Yes a registered occupational therapist (OTR) does administer the therapy, they are also the ones responsible for doing the initial evaluations, re certifications, and discharges so therefor there is more paperwork to be completed by the OTR. An occupational therapy assistant (OTA) is responsible for completing the daily and weekly notes on the patients that are on their caseload and discussing the progress with the OTR.
The amount of patients per OTR vs OTA does vary from setting to setting. If the OTR has a certain amount of evaluations to complete on a certain day then their caseload would be lower than a OTA who only has to do treatments.

They do therapy in different settings. In outpatient therapy places often they do rehab on the upper extremity, usually focusing on the wrist and hand. In hospitals and nursing homes they do therapy related to ADL's (activities of daily living). Basically they do therapy to get patients back to feeding themselves, bathing, dressing, hygiene, etc. Another setting for them is in pediatrics.

Whether or not an OTR actually performs therapy or paperwork is entirely down to the facility they work at. Sometimes its both. A COTA predominantly performs therapy but also has some paperwork to fill, just not as much as an OTR. I would suggest that you call some places up and see if you could be permitted to observe an OT in action, but not just one place. Do pediatrics, Physical disability, mental health and geriatrics. It is only then that you can truly see for yourself whether or not this profession is for you. Also there are videos on Youtube under Occupational Therapy.

both therapy is the fun part
