My son was diagnosed with autism a few weeks ago, he's 2 1/2. He has been going to the local hospital 2x a

week for occupational therapy...... they have been using light weights * sand bags* on his shoes because my son has a habit of running around and not focusing.......
I have mixed feeligs about this..obviously its licensed occupational therapists and its at a hospital and they know what they are doing..has anyone ever heard of this method before?

You should check into a therapy called Neurofeedback or Bio feedback. They are easy, painless, and very effective. It's an amazing break through that has been around for a while, but mainstream medicine doesn't agree with the success rates. Trust me, do some research on it.

I've never heard of that method specifically, but it makes complete sense to me. The OT isn't going to be able to help your son if he's running around and not paying attention. They're not hurting him, so don't worry about it.

I've not heard of that (both of my kids spent over 1 year in OT - different therapists) but it actually kind of makes sense. A lot of kids on the spectrum have problems with self-regulation; providing pressure via the sandbags might help regulate his sensory system and thus increasing his focus.

Your son's OTs are addressing a sensory issue and the weights are to help "ground" his body. My son uses a weighted vest when his body seems out of control. It's a way to help them sense what their body is doing and calms them. Our OT and teachers also use weights on the ankles, lap, and shoulders. The key that we were told is when using weights, go 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off. After a few rounds, his body 'carries' the benefits of the added weight into the time the weights are off. Your OTs should also pay attention to the percentage of weight to your son's weight. Start small, like 5% of his body weight. Good luck! It does work!

Yes...I have used similar techniques w/ my son who has sensory seeking (that is why he is running around aimlessly) behaviors. Have you read the book "The out of sync child"?
