My son was diagnosed with autism a month ago,?

he's 2 1/2. He has been going to the local hospital 2x a
week for occupational therapy...... they have been using light weights * sand bags* on his shoes because my son has a habit of running around and not focusing.......
I have mixed feeligs about this..obviously its licensed occupational therapists and its at a hospital and they know what they are doing..has anyone ever heard of this method before?

It's kind of like using a weighted vest. A weighted vest helps them be more aware of their body and their space. The sand bags won't hurt him. Hopefully it will help him be more aware of his feet and the need to walk.

no but your doing the right thing by using physical therapy with him, don't use drugs and use the physical methods they give you, i know for one my son has autism and used to look at his feet and not pay attention while walking we never used sand bags but this sounds like it might work

I am not sure if I have ever heard of sand bags to be used for "focus" but weighted items have shown to improve life in people with autism. Most young children with autism like pressure exerted on them and this may be more of the reason. Individuals with autism have very different sensory needs then us that don't.

I've heard of it, and if it helps in that area of his autism, that is wonderful. I would not rely on occupational therapy exclusively, but in conjunction with other therapies such as Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) that will help him gain the skills and knowledge he'll need to have as much as a normal life as possible. My son is currently in a ABA program, and we are looking at some Occupational Therapy to coincide with his existing therapy.

I would also incorporate getting into see a DAN doctor, Defeat Autism Now, to have some testing done. If your insurance does not cover it I would contact Autism Solution Center -What your doing is great OT is awesome, however there is so much more you can do for him at his age that would work wonders. it will shock you.

Good Luck
