What treatments can I provide for a child that has Pica eating disorder? |
I am an Occupational therapy assistant, and I parent has come to me with this problem. I think you should consult with a pediatrician and perhaps a nutritionist. I have read and heard that Pica is often caused by a nutritional deficiency, often in a certain mineral or vitamin. I would really consider seeing a specialist on this. This sounds strange, but talk to an OBGYN too. Some pregnant women get pica. whats the problem? what type of Eating disorder does the child have? give us more deteals so we can help you better Find a homeopathic Dr. who has practiced at least 20 years. Is this child developmentally disabled? It is quite common in individuals with D.D. There is no medical treatment specific in the treatment of patients with pica. Deficiencies in iron, calcium, zinc, thiamine, niacin, and vit-D have been associated with pica. Behavioral strategies have been the most effective in treating pica. I worked with one D.D. client who was Autistic and had pica. He would constantly eat cigarette butts. At our facility we had to put ashtrays around the campus that he could not get his hand into. If we were out in the community we had to constantly watch him. We also used a reward system to reward him with something he liked if he didn't eat anything bad during the day. It's a hard disorder to correct especially if the are developmentally disabled. |
