Keratoconus / cornea transplant and working with acid's?

Hi
occupational health have been to see me today and they are not happy about me going to work back in the lab even though the consultant has said ok. i would be working with neat nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen peroxide and fine dusts... i would be wearing goggles at all times but they want to speak to my consultant again.. i know that they have to be sure and the lady was very lovely but im so frustrated ... i had my graft done last november and am now legal to drive again so thats good but i still need to have a graft done on the other eye... any advice on how i can fight my corner would be a great help please..

wow. i have no idea how you could "fight" them...but...

IMO having keratoconus and having had PK for it is in no way a contraindication to the job you are describing. you're at no greater risk for eye damage from chemicals than anyone else.

i dont know what the legalities are, but you're right...they're being ridiculous. you're fine to do that job IMO

If you had a corneal transplant done in one eye and require another one for your other eye, it sounds like you are in a high-risk line of work that could compromise your corneas again. Even with use of goggles and a safety vent hood, accidents can happen. The fumes alone from the acids you are working with can be enough to cause serious damage to your corneas and requuire a second corneal graft, not to mention hydogen peroxide burns the eyes and fine dusts can get imbedded in the cornea and cause scarring and other damage. There is no guarantee that a second corneal transplant will be successful, and why gamble with the results you have now?

What job is worth losing your eyesight over ? Would you even be eligible for workmens compensation payments if your eyesight was damaged on the job and you have been advised to avoid that kind of work?

I know that losing some of our physical performance can take time to accept, but it seems like you need to carefully re-think your emplyment future with respect to protecting your vision. Being in denial about preserving your eyesight can create irreversible consequences.
