Acute rehab after surgery?

I am having a total hip replacement in a few days...the doctors say that the best thing after surgery would be to go to an acute rehab facility. My Blue Cross health insurance said to qualify for an acute rehab I have to meet 3 points of criteria, 1 is rehab for physical therapy, 2 is occupational therapy, 3 is speech therapy. How would I meet this critera? speech? what are they talking about
?

Rehab centers help you return to your normal functioning status.Don't worry the social worker at the hospital will contact the nursing facility and they will let you know if you qualify and if you don't you won't get in.If you are over 65 and have medicare if will pay for 20 days and if you also have insurance they will continue to pay after your medicare exhausts. You won't need speech therapy.Occupational therapy helps you adjust to your normal activities of daily living with your disability.Personally you shouldn't need more than 20 days.If you only have insurance you may not get but a week.Believe me they will let you know

this is considered physical therapy. they use the word acute because it will only take a few months to complete. you qualify for coverage of the therapy.

what they are trying to say is the type of therapy you can obtain is either physical, speech or occupational. I work in a physical therapy office and we see a lot of patients with hip or knee replacements. My best suggestion is to have your Dr. give you a referral for a good physical therapy office. You would benefit more and recover quicker.

Blue cross stuff doesn't make sense. You sure you got it right?
How old are you? Friend of mine (age 50) had L hip re-replaced in January, R one done (again) in April. No "rehab" facility needed or used either time. Maybe you'd need rehab if you're not real strong or healthy, but otherwise, many folks get thru it with just outpatient physical therapy.

Well as far as the criteria goes, you can ask them to clarify if all three are needed, or if you can use just one to qualify. Otherwise I'd say that Blue Cross really doesn't want to cover that therapy as it is probably very expensive. Just because it is the ideal therapy for you after having surgery, doesn't mean that regular physical therapy won't work. If you can, talk to your doctor and tell him or her about what your insurance said about the acute rehab. Your doc might have another suggestion for a solution, or they might recommend another therapy place. I would also look into finding out how soon after surgery you will need to start your exercizes. I myself have had 4 knee surgeries and the easiest recovery comes from getting the movement back as soon as possible. I would check with the doc though, and possibly do some research online. Good luck!
