What is the difference between obsessive-compulsive personality TRAITS and DISORDER?

My doctor said i have obsessive-compulsive personality traits, is this the same with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder?

The traits and the disorder are not the same thing. If you have a personality with obsessive traits, it means that you may be too orderly, or pay too much attention to detail, or worry too much about something that happened in the past, etc.
If you had the disorder, you would have obsessions and/or compulsions all the time and you would be extremely distressed and could not lead a normal life.

Did you ever watch that movie "As Good as It Gets"? That guy suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Traits mean you are displaying symptoms that are usually associated with that problem. The disorder is what you would call it once you have been officially diagnosed with it.

It's a bit like the difference between symptoms (traits) and disease (disorder).

One is a product of the other.

No, a disorder is something that is a lot more severe. My husband has a lot of obsessive-compulsive traits. If you don't want these traits, you could always see a therapist to help you control or recognize these traits. I learned a lot about them by reading the book "Emotional Vampires" It also gives a good explanation of the difference between having the traits and having a disorder.

A trait would be feeling the need to stop and pick up every penny you see on the ground, or all the magazines on a coffee table need to be arranged at a certain angle.
A disorder would be having to wash your hands three times whenever you hear a dog bark outside. Or you have to flip the lights on and off twelve times when you enter a room.

Traits add value to your life, or make you feel like you are enhancing your life. A disorder is something that is illogical, and unuseful in anyway.

No, it's like saying a girl has manly features and then saying the girl is a man.

severity of the disease dictates the name. Traits are less and generally you can function day to day. In more severe forms it can be totally incapacitating. Such as checking over and over if the stove is turned off
