Obesity 'will increase cancers'?

The current obesity epidemic will lead to as many as 12,000 new cancer cases a year in Britain by 2010, researchers have warned.

A recent study suggests that as rates of obesity soar, cancer is likely to strike thousands more British citizens. Excess weight is believed to be behind nearly 4 per cent of all cancers.

According to latest figures, there were 24.2 million obese or overweight people in the UK in 2003. By 2010, the Department of Health predicts those numbers will have risen by 14 per cent to 27.6 million.

Scientists at Cancer Research UK said the number of weight-related cancers diagnosed each year will probably rise from 10,500 in 2003 to 12,000 in the next four years - an increase of more than 14 per cent in just seven years.

How can this current trend be reversed?
How much effect does diet have on obesity?
How can this be changed?
Does not a diet with more vegetables and fibre help?
Why do people still want to "walk into the mouth of death?"

As a cancer survivor I agree with diet being a contributing factor..but..not in my case nor people like me..I have always weighed between 53 and 55 kilos and for my height, that is a bit on the lighter side..I also eat healthy, have done most of my life, never drink alcochol and walk between 4 and 5 kilometers a day..
I would personally be more concerned about the air we breathe, what medications you are being given for other ailments and the chemicals in what we are eating...You dont have to be fat, to be dealt the hand of cancer, nor rich nor poor...in other words, there are many contributing factors which need analyzing honestly without prejudice and releasing the true facts to the public..(including what is in our drinking water that can contribute to cancers).....

4 to 5 kilometers in Oz is only about 2 to 3 miles...it is just long enough to keep me fit, still use the car shopping etc, so still use the same amount of fuel...I use my walking time as my peace and thinking time, then go home and do a great painting or pen that perfect song... Report It

Everything causes cancers! Shall we just go to bed and quietly expire for the good of mankind?

Yeah, it's hardly news. People do it because they like crappy food, sitting on their fat ar5es and drinking too much booze much more than expending energy in the form of exercise or work, eating healthy foods and staying sober. Same with smoking, really - it's not like they don't know the risks.
