Do you think Obesity is a big problem or little problem? |
Do u think it is a big problem that needs to be recgonized like the dangers of smoking are recgonized? Or do you think that fat people should just stop stuffing them selfs with big macs and go run some laps and actually try to lose the weight. I also agree it is a huge problem! but i have to do both sides of this debate, so i need to get peoples opnion's on why they think it's that a big problem Why is obesity a big deal? Obesity is a BIG problem and can pose serious health risk such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disese. So it is as bad smoking. Bear in mind that obesity can be caused by medical reasons other than over eating and lack of exercise. Also, there could be underlying mental issues that cause a person to have an addiction to food and/or sugar loaded drinks. But yes, it is a big (sounds like a pun!) problem. Over here, in Australia, there is a government initiative to try and address obesity in much the same way as there is to reduce smoking. It's a contradiction in some ways. An obese lifestyle can start in early childhood and what kind of adverts do they put on TV in between kids programs?? Yes, McDonalds, Hungry Jacks and any number of adverts for sweets and other teeth and body destroying stuff! And the government voted not to have this type of advertising banned from childrens TV! Risk factors such as smoking and drinking are chosen - obesity, many times, is not. Many obese people have genes which predispose them to 'overweight'. People who fall into this category can definitely find improvement through stringent diet and exercise, but often they will have to spend their entire lives battling what their DNA wants to do, whereas a person who is genetically programmed to be on the thinner side doesn't have to try nearly as hard. Except in cases of the morbidly obese, I don't think there is any hard Obesity is a huge problem in the USA today. Being overfat causes an increased risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, different types of cancer, Diabetes, Hypertension and many other diseases as well. If you just consider the health care related costs alone...in the billions, this classifies obesity as a very big deal. The perception of obesity as a problem depends on the point of view. From the perspective of an obese person, it is a problem if the person who is obese wants to lose weight and has difficulty doing so. For those who choose not to lose weight and remain obese, it may not be a problem. Yes, there are arguments that there are health complications with being obese. However, if that person wants to remain obese, then that is the choice of that person and that person knows that he or she must also accept the reality and consequences of that choice. This from a 620 pound obese man who has made the choice to be this size and remain this size. |
