Does obesity and smoking hurt men's sperm?

I was wondering if anybody knew whether obesity and smoking has a negative effect on the quality of sperm and thus the possible offspring?
I read once that smoking can alter your dna. Does that mean if a man is a smoker and overweight he shouldn't have children because he will produce possibly sick babies?

Smoking and being overweight does not affect a mans sperm production.

If you are concerned about your husbands sperm then go get a semen analysis....

I know that obesity and smoking can cause men to have problems achieving erections and/or ejaculating, but neither of those would alter the DNA and cause him to have unhealthy offspring. Unhealthy men often have less "vigorous" or viable sperm, but if a sperm from the unhealthy male manages to get to an egg, the resulting offspring won't be affected by the unhealthy traits of the father. Obesity can be a genetic trait, but smoking is in no way genetic.

Its not like that he shouldn't have children because he may produce sick children.if he reproduce children they will be healthy.but less chance for that

Hi Lisa... This question that you ask is very complicated. On one hand you realize that one ejaculation produces thousands of sperm and only one is allowed to penetrate the egg. I believe that whether he smokes and is fat is least of the risks for genetic transfer. From a sociological statistical view, all of the world are getting fatter and yet there is no news of population declining. Also, the pilgrims smoked and we have as a nation continued to smoke and that fact has not led to a decline in reproductivity.
To my knowledge I have not seen any studies that conclude significant interference with quality of sperm vigor associated with percent of body fat and presence of nicotine and other biproduct of inhaled cigarette smoke.

how overweight are you talking, excessive obesity can be a problem with quality, but when it comes to smoking it depends on whether the guy is like a chimney or is an occasional smoker, and above all what he is smoking.
Socially this person is an eyesore upon society and should be taken out, however, whether or not you think he will produce sick babies is only half right. the female also contributes to the dna of a baby, if you are obese and a heavy smoker than the chances of having a sick baby is very high however, if you are a regular or extremely skinny woman than the possibilities vary. Have this guy exercise and cut back if you are so obsessed with the situation, or have a kid and pray for mutation of the genes to favor more towards you than him.
