Is Obesity a choice?

Obesity. Is it a disease? Is it a choice? Is it the same as smoking becuase of heart disease? I want to know what you think.

Obesity is usually the result of a sedentary life and overeating. It's not a disease, per se, but it can lead to some major diseases such as diabetes or heart trouble. It is a risk factor just like smoking. I guess you could call it a choice if overeating or eating the wrong things is the cause of the obesity. However, genetics also play a role, as well as lifestyle. Reducing caloric intake and exercising are the best ways to avoid obesity, even if it runs in the family. If you or someone you know has a weight problem, a health care professional can put you on the right track. Good luck!

for some people its a choice and for some people its a disease. If parents are obese, its hard for a kid to stay thin.

It's not a "disease", according to me, anyway. It's not always a choice, or the people don't notice how heavy they've gotten. It's not the same as smoking!

i wouldn't say it's a disease and it's not always the persons fault b/c sometimes obese ppl can't control whats going on with there weight

Is Obesity a choice ?

The answer varies here. I'd say yes and Sometimes..

Yes because...Large parents have large children..they don't stop feeding the kids when they hear their kids cry so obesity happens. They figure food can keep you quiet so they resort to giving kids snacks..the more snacks they are fed the wider kids will grow.

Ever seen that show "Honey we're killing our kids" ? I think thats how the show is titled..it can be seen on TLC.

I'd also say SOMETIMES because people think FOOD is Comfort. So therefore if people are depressed or sad or what ever they turn to food. if they don't stop shoving food in their mouth who will ? Can't complain about being fat really if most of the cause of being fat is your own fault..you know ?

No one wakes up one morning and says "I want to eat until I can't move." It's a gradual thing, a downward spiral, and it's very hard to get out of it. You HAVE to eat to live. It's hard to compare it to smoking because you don't HAVE to smoke to live. Everyone knows smoking is bad but people choose to pick up a cigarette anyway.
Plus people can gain massive amounts of weight through prescription drug use (as a side effect) or through illness. No matter how the weight gets on your body, once it's there it's VERY hard to get it off.

Yes, obesity is a choice. It is the same as smoking.
