Is obesity an eating disorder?

im doing a study on eating disorders and was wondering if obesity was an eating disorder or not so i wanted to see what other people think...

I think what you would be after would be compulsive eating, as eating disorders go. That might or might not result in obesity, but it could just as easily be controlled by bulemia. Obesity is the result of compulsive over-eating, in much the same way as extreme low body weight is the result of anorexia. Eating disorders are categorized by the behavior which causes the problem, not the result of it. They are all obsessive disorders involving food somehow, which is why they are eating disorders. Anorexics don't eat enough, Bulemics binge and purge, and the Compulsive overeater simply eats all the time. As long as they don't consume too many calories, they wouldn't necessarily gain weight. Although I would agree that it would be more likely for them to be obese, one does not imply the other.
