Is obesity really genetic?

Why do fat people keep on suggesting that obesity is genetics? Sure, some people might have a slower metabolism them others, but this doesn't mean that you can't break it even by excercising. Everytime I ask an obese person if they've tried to diet and excercise, they tell me they did, but gave up because it didnt work...DUH!!! ofcourse its not gonna work if you give up. JEEZ, you need to keep on striving at it, it takes months if not years to lose all that blubbering fat, so why do fat people insist that it's genetics? Why can't they give up their laziness and stop giving up and actually work out and diet until they meet their goal, and stop ordering pizza everyweek and eating out so much???

It's not a lie. There are genetic factors to obesity. A recent study found people with a certain gene have a 70% greater chance of being obese. Of course, this study found they averaged 3 kg (6.6 lbs) heavier, which is less than most people are probably overweight. If there's one clear link though then there may be others.

There are though plenty of people who just aren't putting enough effort forth to lose the weight. However, who's to say these people don't have some sort of insatiable hunger for genetic reasons or some other thing going on that makes the amount of effort they need to put forth greater than somebody with a great body.

Just food for thought.

No it's not genetic they keep eating unhealthy instead of exercising and following a healthy diet.

well hun, let me tell you, im the skinniest person yooh will meet. (okay that exaggeration) but let me tell yooh, its not genetics. my friends mom is a huge huge gross thing and shes a twig except bigger than me and its weird. its not genetics. usually children of fatter adults get it becuase there parents dont put them in activities and the kid also eats what the parent eats so they get big too.

PUSH THU THE BARRIER TO LOOSE WEIGHT

I'm obese and it is all my doing. I will step up and admit it. I am capable of losing weight because I have done it before, but I don't know why I just plain out stop dieting. According to your details, I eat whole pizzas every week, have blubbering fat, and am lazy. For me, none of that is true. So in order for you to correct yourself, lose the stereotype. Yes, some obese people like themselves as whales, but as you said, it takes time; time to get fat, and time to lose it. Instead of telling all of us to give up with your crude remarks, help with encoureging words.

Although being obese does not make someone a bad person, the only way to become morbidly obese is consume an excess of empty calories.

As an analogy, the only way for a car to go from having a half tank of fuel to a full tank of fuel, is if someone added more fuel than it burned off. The laws of physics will not change to please or to spite anyone.

People point to genetics and other causes because it is often easier than accepting personal responsibility.

I agree with you. Take African-Americans for example. A lot of them say it's genetics, but how many obese people have you seen in Africa? Like less than 5 %. A lot of people think they will loose weight in 1-2 months....well you can, but it's going to be 5 pounds not 100. To really loose weight and keep the weight off you need to change your life.....a simple diet once in awhile won't do anything. I mean, what's the use of loosing 20 pounds if after 2 months you'll gain it all back again?
