Can you really "grow" out of an nut allergy? If it was a peanut allergy, am I "safe" with almonds?

I was told I was allergic to nuts as a child, my mother passed away, and I've avoided them my whole life. I accidentally consumed some slivered almonds yesterday with no reaction <?> Any info you could give would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Yes and yes. It is possible for an allergy to go away, many people have allergies or asthma when they are young that decrease when they are older. Actually a high percentage of babies are allergic to wheat (this is why we feed them cheerios or rice krispies, they are not wheat based), but obviously not many adults have this allergy.(on a side note a new allergy can also develope at any point in your life) Also, not all nuts are the same, you may be allergic to one but not all. However, since nuts are similar, you should be cautious, especially if you had a life threatening reaction when you did eat peanuts. I hope this clears things up a little bit for you.

Yes, you can get over some allergies, just like you can start getting allergies at anytime in your life.

The best thing to do would be to go get an allergy test done. They will be able to tell you whether or not it's safe for you to eat nuts.

But it is possible you are allergic to only peanuts. But you could become allergic to other things.

The thing is, peanuts are not really nuts. A nut allergy is usually to tree nuts like almonds, walnuts, pecans. I'm allergic to those but can eat peanuts just fine. Sounds like you are the opposite, just allergic to peanuts. Stay away from them!
