Is cinnamon suitable for nut allergy sufferers?

Is cinnamon suitable for nut allergy sufferers?

Hello,

Thats a REALLY GOOD question, and to be honest I really dont know and answer. But I think cinnamon comes from the bark of the cinnamon plant? So its very different in quality to a nut or nut based product.

**I think the best way to find out would be to have some one trained in allergy testing to test the person concerned. I think they call it a patch test or skin test. That would be the safest way to proceed if you have any doubtes at all.

**Some people can be hyper-sensitive to all sorts of substances but from my own experience I would be quite suprised if cinnamon produced any acute allergic reactions, but I dont know.

**You could consult with your local GP or family doctor but my guess is he/she would suggest a similar allergenic testing approach.

i think you should ask a doctor if you're not sure..or at your local chemist...not yahoo answers..where everyone has a different idea..nut allergies are not great

it the bark of a tree and not a nut to be sure ask a doc first

cinnamon is not a nut.. its tree bark actually... you might have an allergy to cinnamon though..
have your medicine or inhalor ready and try a bit to see

No we are not experts here. I know cinnamon is the bark of a tree. I would imagine maple syrup and cinnamon are similar to nuts in their makeup but how would I really know?

cinnamon does not come from a nut, it is actually bark. Check the label on the package for any warnings. If there is no label and you're still not sure, talk to your doctor.

Allergy to Cinnamon

Cinnamon oil has been known as a contact allergen since the 19th century, when sucking on Cinnamon-soaked toothpicks was found to cause contact dermatitis ... The most common reactions described are those of allergic contact dermatitis or irritant contact dermatitis ... Although immediate hypersensitivity reactions are possible, many reported allergic contact dermatitis cases occur as a result of delayed type IV reactions. (Phadia)
Because many products contain cassia and not true cinnamon, it may be difficult to figure out which one you are allergic to. Most "cinnamon" on grocery store shelves is actually cassia. If you have an unidentified allergy that occurs when you eat foods that contain generic "spices" or cinnamon, you might want to investigate the possibility of a cinnamon allergy.

Erythema multiforme, or EM, is a hypersensitivity reaction to agents such as herpes virus, drugs or foods. Oral EM-like reactions may be induced by cinnamon. It is important for dentists to recognize this condition. The authors report an unusual case of cinnamon-induced oral EM-like reaction in an older female patient. The disease manifested itself as chronic extensive surface ulcerations and lip swelling. The patient was treated repeatedly with topical and systemic steroids but responded to them only temporarily. The patient was cured when the offending agent--cinnamon--was eliminated from her diet.

The question you need to ask yourself is, 'is cinnamon a nut?' No. There's your answer.

I would be careful, just like any other new food you would tryMy son is allegeric to cinnamon. He get a bright red rash and loose bowls. he is also allergic to peanuts which means we stay away from all nut .While i dont think there is anything to connect the two allergies I still think it is something to be careful with. As with any child that has allergies there is always a chance he is allergic to more.
