What causes nut allergies which varies by the type of nut, Example, peanut, almond, cashew, etc.?

There are many theories about what causes the allergies. One is that early exposure (less than 3 years old, I think) to the protiens in the nuts can trigger an allergic reaction. The underdeveloped immune system causes the body to see these protiens as harmful and begins to attack them which causes the reaction. It can be mild to severe with anaphylaxis. Sometimes people develop these allergies later in life. There is new reasearch on a "vaccine" that may help decrease the severity of a reaction to peanuts. A good resource is www.foodallergyinitiative.org

Oh, and someone who is allergic to peanuts may not be allergic to tree nuts. A peanut is actually a legume similar to soybeans. However, many of the tree nuts are processed in a facility where peanuts are processed making them off limit to those with peanut allergies.

Peanuts are a common allergen. I think any kind of nut can cause allergies but most people think of peanuts when they get this question.

Allergens. The body has a high sensitivity to them. If you are allergic to peanuts, you may not be allergic to nuts. Peanuts are legumes.
