Have you ever heard of a child being allergic to a nut other than peanut???

I've always heard of the dangers of peanut allergy, but I think my five-year-old is allergic to cashews.
He has asthma and allergies, too, and we carry the cough/runny nose strips with us everywhere we go. A few months ago, I was munching on some cashews while grocery shopping and he had one. I didn't think anything of it, since I'd given him peanut butter, peanut cookies, etc. since he was a baby. He started to cough, and it sounded like a kind of barking cough. I gave him the cough strip anyway (it has an antihistamine in it) and figured he was just having his usual asthma/allergy cough.
Then today, he had some chex mix with cashews and pecans, and the same thing happened, with the barking kind of cough, that this time we realized sounded like the noise he made when we found out he's allergic to shellfish. We gave him the cough/antihistamine strip again, and he was fine.
Has anyone else ever heard of a nut allergy unrelated to peanuts?

It can happen. One of my aunts is allergic to macadamia nuts.

The thing is that peanuts are different from other types of nuts. Although a nut in the culinary sense, in the botanical sense the fruit of the peanut is a woody, indehiscent legume or pod and *not* technically a nut. So it is possible to be allergic to some nuts while being perfectly fine with a peanut.

Mhm. A cashew nearly killed me. Thank god I hadn't eaten a pistachio, when I got an allergy test after my first reaction, that reigstered even HIGHER, meaning I was really sensitve to them. You should take him to the doctor's NOW, not wait until his next appointment! Report It

sure

yes

My son is allergic to cashews, he gets violently ill.

People have allergies to just about Everything now a days so it's not uncommon. My nephew is allergic to raisins of all things

yes

yes, you can be allergic to any food. I would go to the dr. and get a test just in case, but in the mean time watch out for the cashews in all your food.

well yes my friend has a deadly allergic reaction to walnuts

yes I know a kid that was allergic to pretty much evey nut

Yes, you can be allergic to all kinds of nuts. I cannot eat any kind of nut. I had an incident when I developed my allergy to nuts when my airway was closing off. Don't feed your child any kind of nuts. I was having like an asthma attack and you can die. You need to carry an epi pen for emergencies.

I have a friend of mine - her son is allergic specifically to tropical nuts. (not sure what the means). But as a result - he is also allergic to many tropical fruits (ie - pineapple, mangos). You should have your child checked out by a professional - food allergies are not something to be taken lightly or played with or even self diagnosed. If you suspect something - please take your child to a health care professional immediately.
