Are nursing homes beneficial?

the pros and cons of nursing homes

The good ones are. It allows for the elderly to live in a community setting while there are peole around to cook for them and give them their meds and make sure they have all the help that they need.

I look at it this way.......depends on the condition the person is in. If I had a relative that was off his/her rocker and didnt know what was going on, i would NEVER put them in a nursing home because they could be abused and never be able to tell you about it. If I had a relative that was with it and only needed a little bit of help and would be able to tell me if they werent getting the best care, then maybe i would put them in one.

1. When the caregiver can no longer care for the person at home (maybe they need injections or need to be lifted or have certain kinds of therapy or be monitored in certain ways). Perhaps they are dangerous or have dangerous behavior. Nursing home is really the only option. You can't keep a person at home you cannot take care of. it's irresponsible.
2. The people at the nursing home aren't close relatives and may not treat or care for the person well. However, there is much elder abuse by relatives too. So sometimes the nursing home caregivers actually give kinder treatments.
3. nursing homes are covered by medicaid. if the person is poor the government pays for their care.

Pros are at least these elderly people are being somewhat taken care of since their families either cant or wont.

Cons the patients are treated the same way a family member would. Alot of times people are neglected in this type of setting.

can be . can also be dumping grounds for the old.
can be places where neglect and mistreatment take place.
can be places where a person is well looked after but this works more often if the person in the home has frequent visits from family next of kin. the next of kin should only be the next of kin if they are willing to visit and check on there family member often
at least 1x per week if not more and they are at all times aware of and looking for any sign of neglect or mistreatment
